I was walking home and I saw these people sitting on the bench. I felt terribly upset watching on as this old women sat on the other end of the bench from the couple, alone and nearly falling off. I felt her loneliness and the tention that existed in the space between them. This photograph basically points out that sometimes we can be the most alone in this world when we are surrounded by others...

But as others have pointed out theres a whole list of other meanings it could have...

is this the new version you mentioned? if it is, it looks great;if it isnt,it still looks awesome. a though just came into my mind as i was looking at this, and this isnt judgemental or a criticism, but an encouragement:i struggle with this sometimes too, but when you see something like this, a person being a ignored, a homeless man or woman, of course if it had meaning photograph it, but also afterwards or beforehand, go up to that person and get to know them, and learn their story.telling others about how they could do something is great, but doing it is even better. you know what im saying? anyways, again, this is a great shot.

amazing job on this!!! i love black and white photos...isn't it amazing how you can come across something like this just on your way home?

Have you considered the point that maybe the young couple were offering the space for the old woman to sit on, however, she refuses it and sits as far away as she can? It seems this way as there is a large gap in between the two people, and I think the young couple were there first (People dont sit half on a bench when they are there first!) and then the old woman, who comes along a while later, doesnt make full use of the space left. Maybe this is a result of a prejudice towards younger people?

Aww..it's so sad..you should have gone up to her and hugged her. No, actually, maybe not ;) She might have beat you over the head! Really amazing photo though.
